Sodium Blood Test
Sodium Blood Test, The sodium blood test measures the concentration of sodium in the blood sodium can also be measured using a urine test. A Sodium test is a routine test that allows the doctor to see how much sodium level is in your blood. It is also called sodium serum ted: Sodium is an essential mineral of your body. Sodium is particularly important for nerve and muscle function. Your body keeps sodium in balance through a variety of mechanisms. Sodium gets into your blood through food and drink. It leaves the blood through Urine, stool, and sweat.
Functions of Sodium:
It is involved in glucose, galactose, and amino acid absorption. It maintains osmatic pressure in body. It maintains blood pressure and fluid balance of body. It helps in muscle contraction and relaxation. It helps in the transmission of nerve impulses and improves our main function. Sodium maintains the pH in our body and increases the flow of urine. It prevents us from sunstroke and helps in restoring healthy skin stein.
Causes of High Sodium in Blood:
High level of sodium in blood as called hypernatremia which may be due.
- Impaired kidney function
- Vomiting High fever
- Use of diuretics
- Congestive Heart failure and Hyperaldosteronism
- Liver disease or cirrhosis
Causes of Low Sodium in Blood:
A low level of sodium in the blood is called hyponatremia which may be due:
- Heart failure, kidney failure
- Brain dysfunction Cirrhosis
- Addison’s disease
- Bevel obstruction
- Buns Hypotension
- Myxedema and Malnutrition
- Dizziness, exhaustion
Metabolic Panel of Sodium blood Test:
The sodium blood test is part of a basic metabolic Panel. This is a group of related tests. The metabolic field includes tests for:
A normal blood sodium level is between 135 and 145 (mEq/L).
No special preparation. A blood sample was taken, and a Urine sample was taken.
Procedure In Blood:
Collect 3 to 5ml blood samples in the Green top tube because the Green top tube contains lithium heparin. Centrifuge the blood sample and separate the serum. Plasma or serum is use for test on an advanced analyzer.
Procedure In Urine:
Collect the 3 to 5ml urine into the urine container and sent it to the laboratory for further analysis by using a strip of urine.
Result range from normal to abnormal.
Normal result for this test are 135 to 145 mEq/L Different laboratories use different values for “normal”.
Abnormally low level:
An abnormally low level of blood sodium level lower than 135 mEq/L is called hyponatremia It may have Symptoms:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Loss of Consciousness or coma
